@ Durham Cathedral

02 February 2017

7.30pm

Candlemas is known as the Presentation of Christ in the Temple, and commemorates an early stage in Jesus’ life. As Jesus is brought into the Temple, Simone, who had been promised that he would not die before he had seen the Messiah (Luke 2.26), recognises Jesus’ divinity and prays the ‘Nunc dimittis’, a prayer that is said or sung at Evening Prayer every day of the year (Lord, now lettest thou they servant depart in peace, according to thy word…).

The Cathedral will be lit by candlelight and music is provided by the Cathedral Consort of Singers.
