04 March 2017 - 04 June 2017

Artist Stephen Willats has been a pioneer of Conceptual Art and a significant contributor to the development of computing since the early 1960s. At the heart of this practice is an examination to how individuals construct their identities and position themselves in the world. In 1997 Willats collaborated with the Middlesbrough Art Gallery on a project connecting different organisations in the town, from the library to the mosque. This exhibition revisits that project through a newly commissioned piece, for which mima invited Willats to return to Middlesbrough to work with local community builders, and features various pieces from the 1970s to the present day that explore the connection between personal narratives and social conditions through themes of housing, class, work conditions and power relations.
