Our fear of the foreign is our fear of the stranger within (Julia Kristeva)

As part of our programme surrounding the Out of Chaos: Art, Identity and Migration exhibition, join this experimental workshop at the Laing to assemble a collage travelling case reflecting your identity and the world around you.

Coined by Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso, the term ‘collage’ suggests work that is at the same time serious and tongue-in-cheek. Referencing the work of Cornell, Rauschenberg, Schwitters, Hannah Hoch and Dada, this practice-based workshop will encourage you to explore what it is to create art through assembling different objects and images.

Collage materials and some boxes/bags will be provided although you are encouraged to bring your own particular suitcase/bag/small box to work with.

Artist Tracey Tofield is an Associate lecturer with the Fine Art and Architecture departments at Newcastle University. She works across media boundaries including drawing, painting, video and performance.
