Berwick Festival Opera is delighted to present one of the world’s best loved and most performed operas – brilliantly uniting drama, melodrama and the supernatural with truly gorgeous music and some of the most memorable arias in the repertoire.
Mozart’s timeless tale of a ruthless lothario resonates profoundly with our own contemporary morality, heightened by our chosen setting in the world of the super slick corporate CEO – an over-hyped, celebrity love-machine, whose exploits titillate those unaffected by his exploits whilst darkening the hearts of all those on the receiving end of his attentions.
Don Giovanni is an opera which pulls back the curtain on what many men have done (and still do) from positions of power in an unequal world for women, where people like The Don feel they can grab what they want when they want, and never face the consequences.
Sung in English in a new translation by Austin Gunn.
Performed to a new edition of the score orchestrated for chamber orchestra by Matthew Rooke.
