With treachery and deceit, scheming and threat, tragedy, rapprochement and romance – this film has it all!
Sunrise was made in 1927, well before the rise of film noir in the 1940s, but you’d be forgiven for thinking the storyline comes from a later decade. A tale of a couple and their baby living a simple life in the countryside, when a femme fatale from the city threatens their cosy domestic stability. Sunrise teeters on the brink of crime drama, but it’s fundamentally a film about loyalty and love versus the seductive dream of escape.
“The poignancy and humanity of some sequences of Sunrise has never been surpassed in any movie, sound or silent” – William K. Everson, American Silent Film
“This film is precious, not least because it belongs to a lost time – it’s one of the silent era’s final hurrahs” – Pamela Hutchinson, The Guardian
