PREVIEW: Anglo-Saxon Family Fun Weekend @ Durham Cathedral
Posted on August 2nd 2017 by Whats on Northeast
Since 29th July, Durham Cathedral have started permanently displaying some of the exquisite Treasures of St Cuthbert, including his pectoral cross, embroidered vestments and preserved wooden coffin, as part of their ongoing Open Treasure scheme.
To help celebrate the artefacts being placed on permanent display, on 12th-13th August the Cathedral will be playing host to an action-packed, eventful and information Anglo-Saxon Family Fun Weekend. A group of Anglo-Saxon raiders, traders and craftspeople will be taking up temporary residence in the grounds, and will be all set to transport you back with all the sights, sounds and smells of a bygone era.
Prepare to be amazed by the 10m long ship that’s dropping its anchor on top of the hill, and find out all about how Anglo-Saxon navigation works. You can also get to grips with knowing how to fish and make nets to make life on the sea a bit easier, but if your sea legs aren’t quite up to the task then you can also find out more about building crafts and the architecture of the day.
If you want to get properly hands-on then there’s the chance to grind flour using a quern stone (don’t know what one is? You will by the end of the weekend!) try on some Anglo-Saxon clothing, prepare yourself for battle, get a bit arty and create paintings with pigments and get involved in a few games.
If you’re up for something entertaining yet educational, this free weekend is set to be a perfect experience!
