PREVIEW: Heritage Open Days @ Durham Cathedral
Posted on August 29th 2017 by Whats on Northeast
Thanks to their Open Treasure collection – which has now expanded to include the historical and spectacular Treasures of St. Cuthbert – you’d think that heritage at Durham Cathedral might not be able to get any more open than it already is.
But between 7th-10th September, things are set to open up at the historical site even more. Organised by English Heritage, Heritage Open Days are returning this year and are making the UNESCO World Heritage Site even more magical than usual. Across the four days, they’ll be giving access to some areas not usually seen by the public, as well as giving the opportunity for you to learn more about the area.
On 7th, 9th and 10th September, book early to enjoy a free tour around the site with an experienced guide – the knowledgeable staff will be able to fill you in on the rich history of the cathedral, and providing an insight into its importance on a local and national level. For anyone with green fingers, on Saturday 9th September the allotment garden on the South Bailey will be inviting guests to see where the flowers for display are cultivated. Anyone looking for a few hints and tips on how to make their garden really blossom can also ask the gardeners just how they do it.
On the same day, why not pop into the Deanery to take a look at some of the exquisite and rare medieval wall paintings that decorate its edges. You’ll have to book a place to get a peek at their majesty, but it’ll be well worth it. That very morning, there’s also a chance to soak in even more history with the cathedral’s regular History Walk; the stroll along the woodlands and riverbanks provides unique views, as well as insight from the expert walk leader.
Until 9th September, there’s also still the chance to see all three issues of Durham Cathedral’s Magna Carta and a group of six documents known as the Forest Carter, topping off the weekend with some Open Treasure.
Whether you’re a regular visitor to the site or making a pilgrimage for the very first time, it’ guaranteed that you’ll find something new to discover.
