If you’re not sure what to get up to next week, we’ve got seven events to fill out your seven days! Make sure you put these dates in your diary…
Monday 11th September
1867 @ Tyne Theatre & Opera House, Newcastle
Prepare to dive into the unexpected! The team who brought us Hitler’s Headquarters and WYTCH in Newcastle are back once again, this time celebrating the history of the Tyne Theatre & Opera House. As the theatre celebrates its 150th birthday, they’re inviting small audiences to come along and get fully immersed in a multi-sensory experience celebrating the heritage of the venue. What else you can expect from this unique journey has been kept firmly under wraps, so if you want to know more, well, you’d best jump at the opportunity to get involved!
Tuesday 12th September
Crazy For You @ Theatre Royal Newcastle
The ultimate feel-good musical is back and it’s hitting Newcastle this week! Featuring a fabulous score from the Gershwin brothers, the multi-award winning romantic comedy filled with dance numbers charts the troubled love story of Bobby, the wealthy son of a New York banker and frustrated Broadway wannabe, and Polly, the daughter of a theatre proprietor in Nevada. As much a celebration of Broadway musicals as it is a romantic plot, get ready for some high kicking, glamorously glamorous drama!
Wednesday 13th September
Knitting in the Round @ Auckland Castle
Get stuck into some heritage crafts at Auckland Castle this week with Andie, the castle’s Heritage Skills Coordinator. On this informal day, you’ll learn to knit in the round on four double-pointed needles. By the end of the day you’ll have learned a new skill and be able to create all sorts of new knitting designs using this old yet practical technique.
Thursday 14th September
Carmen on the Lake Encore Screening @ The Witham
Here’s a unique chance to see George Bizet’s Carmen like you’ve never seen it before. Carmen on the Lake is being recorded like on a spectacular floating stage on Lake Constance in Bregenz, Austria, complete with lavishly original and innovative design features. Keeping the spirit of the original story alive – and its many well-known opera classics, including the Flower Song, Habanera and the Toreador song – Kasper Holten of the Royal Opera House is nonetheless breathing new life into the much-loved classic, with the screening event meaning you can watch it all unfold from the comfort of a cinema chair.
Friday 15th September
1940s Canteen Dance Party @ Life Science Centre
Pin up your curls and don your best zoot suit – the Life Science Centre are transporting you back into the fabulous 1940s! With entertainment from the swinging Bluebirds, there’s also a classic, ration-themed three-course meal! Tuck into the Oslo meal for starters, a Lord Woolton Ministry of Food pie for mains and a clementine and prune flan with custard for afters. Rest assured, there’ll be no rations at the bar though!
Saturday 16th September
Small Worlds @ Arts Centre Washington
This week little ones can venture inside a magical canvas dome and explore five stories that will set their imaginations alight. Mimika Theatre are presenting Small Worlds, which while set within the intimate environment of the dome will transport the audience on a journey with five characters: a bug, a goose, a fox cub, a cat and a six year old girl. Together they go on adventures that tell of the steps it takes to venture out into the big, wide world using a mix of miniature landscapes, puppetry, animation and music. It’s set to be a uniquely immersive experience for budding theatre goers.
