Created by Gibside Sewing Group, ‘Determination, passion and triumph: Gibside’s women’ includes 14 beautifully handmade textile pieces celebrating women of historical significance linked to Gibside.

On display in the chapel, each individual piece took around five months to complete and tells a story relating to the women that feature within the exhibition.

Women featured in the artworks are Lady Elizabeth Bowes (nee Blakiston); Eleanor Bowes (nee Verney); Mary Bowes (nee Gilbert); Mary Eleanor Bowes, Countess of Strathmore; Sarah Delaval, Countess of Tyrconnel; Mary Milner Bowes, the Dowager Lady Strathmore and Josephine Bowes (nee Benoite Coffin-Chevalier).

The seven women lived between 1660-1874, a time when a woman’s ability to express herself was generally limited. Two of the readily available mediums for female expression during this time were through the clothes they wore and through their craftwork.

‘Determination, passion and triumph: Gibside’s women’ is on display from now until Wednesday 31 October.

Gibside Chapel is open every day from 10am to 5pm until 31 October and visitors can pick up a ‘Determination, passion and triumph: Gibside’s women’ leaflet from visitor reception. Normal admission charges apply.
