PREVIEW: Halloween-themed half term planned at Woodhorn Museum

Spooky story telling, a hidden pumpkin trail, and spectacular bird of prey displays are just some of the events taking place at Woodhorn Museum this October half term as part of its Halloween-themed Let Go autumn season.

Rowan Brown, chief executive of Museums Northumberland, said: “The autumn marks our very first season of events as part of the new Coal Forest programme at Woodhorn Museum.

“As well as showcasing stunning artwork by regional, national and international artists on our Coal Forest art trail, we’ve organised lots of family friendly Halloween-themed events to keep visitors of all ages entertained this October half-term.”

Woodhorn Museum’s Pumpkin Trail opens from Saturday 27 October – Sunday 4 November. Find all the pumpkins hidden through the museum and colliery buildings and receive a Halloween treat.

Some spectacular birds of prey take flight at Woodhorn Museum on Wednesday 31 October. Get up close and personal with owls, eagles, hawks and vultures as Ridgeside Falconry lead interactive flying displays.

Completing the Halloween-themed lineup on Wednesday 31^st October is professional storyteller Stephen Skelton, whose spine-chilling tales will uncover what happens after dark at Woodhorn Museum. Who is the mysterious ‘man in a leather apron’ lurking in the Coal Town exhibition?

Families visiting during the half term holidays will also be able to help visual artist Bethan Maddocks create The Fallen Forest, a magical tree-scape on the Coal Forest art trail. Using paper craft techniques, visitors will be able to fold, shape and decorate a sculptural autumnal leaf to build the autumnal phase of The Fallen Forest. The Fallen Forest will then change with the seasons through winter and spring. The Fallen Forest workshops take place on weekends and every open day during the Northumberland School Holidays for the duration of the Coal Forest season (Saturday 27 October 2018 – Monday 22 April 2019).

The Let Go autumn season at Woodhorn Museum forms part of Coal Forest, a six-month programme that sees magical art installations transform the museum and colliery heritage buildings. Accompanying the artworks is a changing events programme themed around the seasons; Let Go (autumn), Glow (winter) and Grow (Spring).

Coal Forest and the Let Go autumn season opens from Saturday 27 October. Entry to Woodhorn Museum is free for children aged 0-16 and £7 for adults. Concession tickets are priced at £6. All passes are valid for unlimited visits for 12 months from the date of issue.
