PREVIEW: Woodhorn Museum to Glow during the winter months

Woodhorn Museum’s seasonal exhibition, Coal Forest, moves from autumn to winter from 1 December with the arrival of Glow; a season of festive events, story-telling, ice skating and family arts activities throughout the deepest winter months.

Rowan Brown, chief executive of Museums Northumberland, said: “We’ve celebrated autumn with our Let Go season and now it’s time for Coal Forest to embrace the winter and bring a touch of warmth and magic to Northumberland this festive season.”

The Glow season begins on Saturday 1 December with the Woodhorn Museum Winter Market. Held inside the historic Workshop Galleries, the Market features local food producers, craft products made by local artists and gift items from the region’s best makers and crafters.

Skate through history in Woodhorn Museum’s atmospheric Pit Yard from Saturday 1 December with the return of the WonderIce Rink. Open everyday until Christmas Eve, special autism-friendly skating sessions are available for families looking to enjoy a more relaxed experience.

What festive season would be complete without a visit from a certain very special person? From 7-24 December, Woodhorn Museum welcomes Father Christmas himself to read some festive tales including ‘The Snowman’ and ‘The Polar Express’. Find out what food and drink to leave Santa and his reindeer on Christmas Eve and head home with a seasonal gift to place under the Christmas Tree. Special under five Friday sessions and autism-friendly storytelling events are available throughout December. Visit www.museumsnorthumberland.org.uk for dates.

Woodhorn Museum’s art installation, The Fallen Forest, continues its magical transformation through the Glow season. Families can help visual artist Bethan Maddocks by making and decorating glowing gems to bring light to the Fallen Forest trees and keep the winter darkness at bay. The Fallen Forest changes with the seasons through autumn, winter and spring. The Fallen Forest workshops take place on weekends and every open day during the Northumberland School Holidays for the duration of the Coal Forest season (Saturday 27 October 2018 – Monday 22 April 2019).

The Glow winter season at Woodhorn Museum forms part of Coal Forest, a six-month programme that sees magical art installations transform the museum and colliery heritage buildings. Accompanying the artworks is a changing events programme themed around the seasons; Let Go (autumn), Glow (winter) and Grow (Spring).

The Coal Forest: Glow season opens from Saturday 1 December. Entry to Woodhorn Museum is free for children aged 0-16 and £7 for adults. Concession tickets are priced at £6. All passes are valid for unlimited visits for 12 months from the date of issue.
