From stepping back in time at world-class events and family fun runs to out of this world astrophotography and fascinating hands-on exhibitions. There’s still so much more to look forward to this summer in Durham.
Kynren – An Epic Tale of England
The UK’s biggest outdoor live family theatre event is now half way through its spectacular season! With six shows left to go, now is the perfect time to treat the family to an evening they will never forget. Travel through 2000 years of history, myth and legend at this live-action extravaganza, voted one of the top 5 performances to see in the UK by Tripadvisor.
Shake hands with a Viking at the new Viking Village pre-show attraction. Visit the cookhouse and watch sparks fly at the working blacksmith’s forge. Enjoy a tasty tipple at the 1940s bar in the food village and check out the Georgian shop – a treasure trove of gifts.

Beamish Museum’s 1950s Welfare Hall
A new decade has been brought to life at Beamish Museum with the opening of the 1950s Welfare Hall, the first building in the museum’s 1950s Town! The hall hosts a packed programme of 1950s activities for visitors to enjoy including music, dancing, crafts, keep fit and amateur dramatics. You can even pay a visit to the 1950s drop in NHS clinic.
Durham Cathedral Central Tower
Will you take on the 325 step climb to the top of Durham Cathedral’s Central Tower? We promise its worth it. Enjoy stunning 360° views across the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Durham City and the surrounding countryside from a top the newly re-opened central tower.
Lego®: Building The Bowes Museum
People of all ages, from children to the young at heart, can see The Bowes Museum in a new way, as you recreate the museum’s history and collections in Lego® and follow the interactive trail around the museum from 25 May – 13 October.
Great North Festival of Agriculture at Beamish Museum
Join the harvest celebrations and welcome the changing season at Beamish Museum’s annual month-long festival. Celebrate the region’s rural heritage at various events throughout the month including the famous Leek Show, Agricultural show, hands-on heritage skills and traditional harvest festival. Various days from Thursday 20 August – Sunday 30 September.
Raby Castle Late Night Milky Way Photography
Make the most of the dark moonless nights in late August when the Milky Way is at its best and join local photographer and astronomer Gary Lintern at Raby Castle for an unforgettable evening. Gary will be sharing his secrets for capturing and editing the perfect shots of the beautiful Milky Way on Saturday 24 and 31 August.
Auckland Castle Trail Race and Fun Run
Swap pavements for picturesque parkland at The Auckland Project’s annual trail race. Take in the beautiful views of Auckland Castle’s Deer Park and grounds on two different runs the two-mile family fun run or the challenging five-mile trail race on Sunday 25 August.
Don’t miss Durham’s largest open air (and England’s oldest) agricultural show at Wolsingham on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 September. A jam-packed weekend celebration of farming life and countryside entertainment the whole family can enjoy.
An Evening of Queen at The Emirates Riverside
A must for any Queen fan – enjoy an ‘Evening of Queen’ as a dazzling collection of performers from London’s West End come together for a spectacular outdoor tribute concert to one of the world’s great rock bands – Queen on Sunday 15 September.
Discover hidden treasures, never before seen places and try out new experiences during Heritage Open Days – England’s largest festival of history and culture.
