CANCELLED - Cathy
@ Gala Theatre and Cinema
Book Now05 May 2020 - 09 May 2020
When Cathy and her teenage daughter are forced out of their flat by spiralling living costs, they struggle to find a suitable home. Reluctant to move away, Cathy seeks help from the local housing office, only to find herself falling through cracks in the system, with no one willing or able to stop her descent.
Candid, poignant and intimate, this affecting play offers a timely reflection on the lives of those at the sharp end of economic austerity, faced with impossible choices and an uncertain future. Inspired by Ken Loach’s 1966 television drama, Cathy Come Home. When first broadcast, it sent shockwaves through British society. Telling the story of a young couple descending into poverty and homelessness after being evicted, the gritty BBC film was watched by a quarter of the UK population. Now, in a society facing low pay, zero-hour contracts and rental costs way beyond their reach, this updated story is a powerful and tender look at the human cost of the housing crisis.
Cathy was originally produced by Cardboard Citizens, a company who make life-changing theatre with and for homeless people.
The performance on Thursday 7 May will be a BSL interpreted performance.
