Planning has started in earnest for this year’s repurposed Festival of Thrift with a call-out for artists to create a stand-out launch for the weekend of activities in September.
The organisers of the national festival of sustainability are commissioning an artwork to create ‘One Beautiful Moment’ to launch the 2020 Thriftfest Upcycled on 12 September.
Having recently announced that, due to the pandemic, the hugely popular large-scale event at Kirkleatham, near Redcar is off the cards this year, the team is now working hard to develop new ways of connecting with festival-goers.
‘One Beautiful Moment’ is part of the festival’s annual VIEWPOINTS showcase of art focused on sustainable themes, which last year saw temporary artworks displayed across the Tees Valley highlighting the issue of ‘clean air’.
Stella Hall, Festival of Thrift’s director, explained that the current challenging circumstances meant that this year’s commission has had to take a different approach.
“We’re looking for proposals from artists that people can engage with online but also, ideally, has elements that can be accessed live in a way that meets social distancing measures.”
Artists are being asked to respond to the broad theme of future sustainability in their proposals, to be interpreted in whichever way they see fit.
Stella added: “We welcome proposals that explore how we can address what we, as a society, have learned about our impact on the environment in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We’re seeking creative ideas that are high quality, engaging, and accessible, but also challenging and thought provoking. Above all we’re looking for proposals to deliver the one beautiful moment we all need just now.”
The deadline for submission of proposals is Friday 10 July. Further details are available at https://www.festivalofthrift.co.uk/viewpoints-one-beautiful-moment-artist-call-out/
