Monday 12^th September
ORCA Shore Watch: Dolphins and Porpoises @ Souter Lighthouse

They’re some of the most majestic creatures of the sea and Souter Lighthouse are giving you the opportunity to identify them in a special, completely free workshop. As well as offering the chance to identify the sea mammals, where you can put your new ID skills to the test, you’ll also be making a difference, helping to gather invaluable data to aid conservation.

Tuesday 13^th September
English Rose: Feminine Beauty from Van Dyck to Sargent @ The Bowes Museum

The English Rose exhibition at The Bowes Museum is gradually drawing to a close, finishing on 25^th September. That means there’s a week and a bit to see some of the finest paintings celebrating the English Rose: a salute to 400 years of society’s greatest beauties. Works by everyone from Van Dyck to Sargent are on display, proceeding in chronological order from 17^th to 20^th Centuries, so you can see the development of portrayals over time. It’s an exhibition no art buff will want to miss out on.

Wednesday 14^th September
Ronan Keating @ Newcastle City Hall

Ronan Keating’s new album is pretty aptly named: Time of My Life. That’s what the former Boyzone member promises to deliver when he sings songs from one of his most personal albums to date. He says he’s now making the music that he wants to make, and is now even playing guitar on stage too! Of course, expect him to also play songs from across his extensive 22-year year career, including some of his incredible 14 solo Number One singles. Demand for this gig was so much that Ronan added a second date on Thursday 15^th September too, so there’s a second chance to catch the Irish pop singing legend!

Thursday 15^th September
The Carpenters Story @ Sunderland Empire

Delve into the theatrical story of The Carpenters in this award-winning musical that even had Richard Carpenter himself saying that he was flattered by the accurate portrayal! For one night only The Carpeneters Sotry will see 8 live musicians combining with the cast to retell the story of one of the most successful and beloved pop duos in history. The production features all the classic too, including ‘(They Long to Be) Close to You,’ ‘We’ve Only Just Begun’ and ‘Please Mr Postman,’ so there’s no excuse not to be singing along!

Friday 16^th September
Hilarity Bites @ Bishop Auckland Town Hall

The latest edition of Bishop Auckland Town Hall’s rib-tickling series of live events features another stellar line-up. Regular BBC Radio 4 guest Jessica Fostekew is headlining, and is set to deliver on the laughs with the technique she’s been honing since she started stand-up in 2008. Joining her is Tom Ward, who’s made quite a name for himself after becoming a finalist in the BBC Radio New Comedy Awards 2014, adding to his appearance at the Leicester Square New Comedian Final in 2013. The night is hosted by Pete Otway, who’ll be providing no reprieve from the giggles in-between the acts…

Saturday 17^th September
Celebrating Ganesha @ The Bowes Museum

If you haven’t already seen it, then this weekend is your last chance to check out the fascinating exhibition Celebrating Ganesha at The Bowes Museum. Coinciding with the Hindu month of Bhadrapada, when thousands of clay statues and huge images of Ganesha are worshipped in households, the exhibition’s main focus is a 13^th Century schist sculpture of the deity. It’s accompanied by complimenting Gouache paintings and woodcut prints that depict Ganesh in traditional scenes. It’s a great chance to learn more about a different culture and see some beautiful artwork at the same time.

Sunday 18^th September
Deadly or Delicious? @ Killhope

If you go down to the woods today, would you know if the mushrooms you found were delicious or deadly? Helping you to recognise the difference in this family-friendly day at Killhope is expert Brian Athey, who’ll be letting you know what’s a succulent shroom and what’s a foul fungus. The foray is followed by a BBQ taster session of the edible specimens found on the tour, so make sure you find lots of tasty treats!
