A rare opportunity to see all of the original Borough Charters of Newcastle on display in one place.

Dating from 1342, these unique historic documents will be laid out chronologically in the search room for close viewing. Members of staff will be on hand to tell you more about these charters and answer any questions.

The charters record pivotal moments in the history of Newcastle, including the formal separation of Newcastle from Northumberland (1400), the grant of city status (1882) and the introduction of the title of Lord Mayor (1906). Some examples are finely illustrated, most notably the charters of Charles II.

Please note that the search room will be closed for general research during this event.
