Staindrop Scarth Hall

The Village

Staindrop is one of County Durham’s green villages, with mainly eighteenth century stone houses surrounding a series of interlocking greens. In 1971 the centre of the village was designated a Conservation Area in order to secure its protection and improvement.

The Hall

Staindrop’s Scarth Memorial Village Hall was built in 1875 in memory of Thomas Freshfield Scarth, land agent to the Dukes of Cleveland of Raby Castle. An upstairs room was added after the 1914-1918 war to commemorate the men from Staindrop who died in that conflict. During the Second World War, the Hall was used to provide N.A.A.F.I. facilities to soldiers stationed in Staindrop. In the late 1940/50’s there was a cinema in the Hall. Another service was the use of the upstairs Reading Room with newspapers and books provided.

The Scarth Hall hosts many activities and continues to provide that original intention of a centre for village life. The size and layout of Staindrop Village Hall makes it an ideal choice for private and business functions, Weddings, Christenings and Birthday Celebrations.

The hall is available for hire for:

• Meetings/Seminars
• Social Events
• Fairs and Sales
• Rehearsals
• Training
• Functions
• Parties
• Stage Productions/Concerts
• Sports Classes
