A Brief History of Theatre: An informal introduction to the development of European theatre from its earliest origins in ancient Greece to the five key practitioners (Henrik Ibsen, Anton Chekhov, Constantin Stanislavsky, Bertolt Brecht & Samuel Beckett) who provided the solid foundations for modern 20th and 21st century theatre. The course consists of sixteen sessions (7.30pm – 9.30pm) between Tuesday 11th October and Tuesday 21st February.

A Brief History of Twenthieth Century Theatre Part Two: This course traces the development of 20th century theatre from the influential writers of the Edwardian period to the role played by the Royal Shakespeare Company and National Theatre. The course takes a thematic approach with topics including American Theatre, Musicals, Theatre at War, Irish Theatre and Censorship and the Theatre and examines the contributions of significant practitioners including Joan Littlewood, Peter Brook and Matthew Bourne. The course consists of sixteen sessions (10am – midday) between Wednesday 12th October and Wednesday 22nd February. Either course can be studied first. Each session will comprise an illustrated talk followed by a group discussion of that day’s topic. There will be a mid-session break for refreshments.
