Geofictions: Exploring the Material Politics of South Gare

This workshop addresses the relationships between nature, industry, technology, and the material imaginaries of place. It brings together geology, art and writing, with an emphasis on creative and critical ‘doing’ through dialogue, experimentation and exchange.

The workshop explores South Gare and the now-closed Teesside steelworks in Redcar, excavating the entangled geo-industrial identities of the area and its ecologies of obsolescence and waste. Through  on-site practical tasks and activities, participants ‘read’ South Gare’s landscape, debris and discarded media as part of a new geological stratum, one that evidences items such as electronics and plastic as part of the future fossil record.

Helena Hunter and Mark Peter Wright from Matterlurgy introduce participants to creative strategies and methods for gathering objects with which to make assemblages. Together, they also generate fictional texts that strive to reimagine where these objects might come from and where they might end up.

The workshop takes place both at Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (10.00am – 12.00pm) and South Gare (12.00pm – 6.00pm), including the South Gare Marine Club House. Free transportation is provided. Please bring your own lunch, refreshments and snacks, pens and notebooks, smartphone, sturdy footwear and waterproof clothing.
