The Jarrow March to London in 1936, to protest against unemployment in Britain was an event for which Jarrow is famous. Two hundred men, a dog and a local councilor known as Red Ellen marched 300 miles to plea for work.

Designed for KS2 children, this workshop is supported by the museum’s exhibition marking the Jarrow Crusade’s 80th anniversary. It focuses on using enquiry based learning to improve literacy skills with extended and creative writing opportunities. Pupils will examine archive material, photographs and personal accounts to bring the story to life as they think about the lives, hopes and feelings of the men, as well as thinking about the general morale and conditions.

Afterwards, they will put themselves in the shoes of the marching men, to write either a poem, diary entry, song or newspaper article. The day can also include a session making banners, posters and badges.
