A century ago the gifted novelist, essayist and short story writer Sid Chaplin was born in the heart of the Durham coalfield. Before he was 30 the young pitman had established a remarkable career as a writer. To mark his father’s centenary, the playwright Michael Chaplin has edited Hame – My Durham, a delightful collection of the early work that brought Sid to national attention and now a matchless and tender evocation of the lost culture of coal. With the help of dramatised readings and a display of items from the Sid Chaplin Archive at the Robinson Library, Michael Chaplin discusses the book and his new understanding of his father’s life and work.
