County Durham Archaeology Day returns for its 11th consecutive year with a fascinating day of talks and exhibits on the history, archaeology and historic architecture of our region.
Taking place in the Council Chamber and the Durham Room at County Hall on Saturday, 11 March from 9.45am to 4.15pm, the day features talks on:-
- The main walled garden at Auckland Castle: repairs and conservation
- A round house and a counting house: two recent historic building projects
- Historic building recording at The Gates in Durham City
- Recent Archaeological Investigations in the North Pennines
- The Balneum of Concangis: A Roman villa rediscovered at Chester-le-Street
There will also be displays from local archaeological and historic societies and contractors as well as bookstores and the chance to meet and speak with fellow archaeology enthusiasts.
Dr David Mason, the council’s Principal Archaeologist said: “The day is a chance to find out what’s been going on in the region in the previous year in archaeology. From Roman to industrial archaeology, from roundhouses to railways, there is so much to see and discover no matter which areas you are interested in.”
There is always a high demand for places so attendees are advised to book early to avoid disappointment.
Tickets are £14 per person (£12 students) including lunch and refreshments. Call 03000 260 000 to purchase a ticket or book online at https://doitonline.durham.gov.uk/.
