Monday 20th March
Middlesbrough Collection @ mima: Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art

Want to see a huge array of art from around the world and through recent history brought together into one exhibition space? Middlesbrough Collection (which is on display at mima until the end of the year) will be an enlightening experience. Encompassing everything from arts and crafts from the mid-1800s to the present day, the collection’s strength lie in its vast array of post-Second World War painting, American contemporary drawing, European jewellery and international contemporary installation. There’s literally something for every type of art lover to enjoy in this fascinating collection of works.

Tuesday 21st March
Gilbert O’Sullivan @ Newcastle City Hall

This year, Gilbert O’Sullivan is celebrating half a century (yes, a full 50 years) in the music industry. To celebrate this monumental achievement, he’s looking back at five decades of music in a special anniversary tour. Spanning from his debut single ‘Disappear’ to his roaring success in the seventies with his hit single ‘Alone Again Naturally,’ all the way up to songs from his latest album ‘Latin Ala G,’ Gilbert will be spanning the ages to play his biggest and brightest hits (and there’s certainly a lot of them!)

Wednesday 22nd March
Not Dead Enough @ Theatre Royal Newcastle

After the huge success of The Perfect Murder and Dead Simple in recent times, writer Peter James is returning to Newcastle’s Theatre Royal with a brand new, thrilling tale. Not Dead Enough follows Brian Bishop, who was sixty miles away from the scene on the night his wife was murdered. Or that’s what he says anyway. Detective Superintendent Roy Grace (still dealing with the mysterious disappearance of his own wife) is on the case, and thinks there might be something a bit strange going on. After all, love can be the most dangerous weapon of all…

Thursday 23rd March
Murder By Gaslight: An Evening With Dr Palmer & Dr Crippen @ Tyne Theatre & Opera House, Newcastle

They’re two of the most notorious doctors in British history – and I bet you thought they were both dead. Well, William Palmer and Harvey Crippen are back from the grave for an evening of murderous medicine at the Tyne Theatre, but don’t worry, you’re in safe hands. The pair are only being channelled by Don’t Go Into The Cellar! Theatre (the country’s leading practitioners of macabre Victoriana) in order to recount their various case histories, so that you can decide whether these diabolical doctors were really in fact guilty as charged.

Friday 24th March                                      
Chekhov’s Shorts @ The Maltings, Berwick

When you think of the works of Russian writer Anton Chekhov, your mind might instantly turn to serious, deep topics. Well, prepare to have everything you thought you knew about Chekhov completely turned on its head! European Arts Company is headed to Berwick to show off a side to the writer that you probably haven’t seen before – the funny one! They’re presenting a collection of hilarious one-act farces from Chekhov (including ‘The Evils of Tobacco,’ ‘The Dimwit’, ‘The Bear’ and ‘The Proposal’) that’ll have you laughing in no time. Who would’ve thought Chekhov’s shorts would be so funny (and not just because they’re a bit too big!)

Saturday 25th March
Community Drop In @ Auckland Castle (hosted at Bishop Auckland Town Hall)

You might have noticed there’s more than a few changes taking place at Auckland Castle at the minute. They’re still hosting a number of heritage skills events, but for the most part their doors are more firmly closed while the castle undergoes some major reworking. If you want to know more about just what the plans are for the castle’s future, then on both Friday and Saturday members of the castle’s ultra-friendly team will be on hand at Bishop Auckland Town Hall to tell you just what they’ve got in store for the future. If you’ve got any questions about what’s happening up at the castle, this is your opportunity to ask!

Sunday 26th March
Tony Law: A Law Undo His-elf What Welcome @ The Stand Comedy Club, Newcastle

Tony Law: multi-award winning comedian and purveyor of all things kind of surreal. In his latest show, ‘A Law Undo His-elf What Welcome,’ he’s getting even closer to a state of nonsensical enlightenment. Basically, it probably doesn’t make any sense whatsoever, under any circumstances, but that probably also means that it makes total sense. Get our drift? No? No, neither do we and we wrote this. Take our word for it though: Tony Law is a genius at conjuring laughs from even the most chaotic of situations, and it really needs to be seen to be believed. If you can believe it.
