When Joseph Shipley died in 1909, his will laid the foundations for a dilemma that would take years to resolve. By the end of it, Gateshead had its first public art gallery. Anthea Lang is a local historian with a passion for Gateshead history, which she feels has often been neglected. Anthea used to be Local History & Heritage Manager for Gateshead Libraries and has written three books on the town’s history. She is also a member of the Gateshead Local History Society.
