When Joseph Shipley died in 1909, his will laid the foundations for a dilemma that would take years to resolve. By the end of it, Gateshead had its first public art gallery. Discover the fascinating story behind the foundation of the Gallery and the man whose massive picture collection was at the heart of the dilemma.

Anthea Lang is a local historian with a passion for Gateshead history, which she feels has often been neglected. Anthea used to be Local History & Heritage Manager for Gateshead Libraries and has written three books on the town’s history. She is also a member of the Gateshead Local History Society.
