A special event for Local History Month.
Discover the history of the Shipley Art Gallery through an architect’s eyes. Allan White, who recently retired as Senior Director of Faulkner Browns Architects, will explore the architectural aspects of the gallery, including the client, brief, site, design, construction and use.
Allan was born and brought up in Gateshead and has lived most of his life in the borough. During his career as an architect, he designed a wide variety of public and commercial buildings. Allan’s relationship with the Shipley spans the past fifty years; as a pupil at the Boys’ Grammar School in the mid-1960s he regularly visited the gallery and today he is Chairman and Secretary of Gateshead Art Society, which itself has had a 70-year relationship with the Shipley.
Allan’s talk will be illustrated by recent images and archive material, including drawings, photographs and documents from Gateshead Central Library and Gateshead Art Society. The production of the presentation has been greatly assisted by Faulkner Browns Architects.
Tickets are free but must be reserved.
