The voluntary principle on which The Witham was founded and continues to run is one of its greatest strengths. The Witham is at the heart of community life in Barnard Castle, and we will ensure our facilities are available to community, social and other charitable groups as a backdrop for celebration, for participation and for people to gain new experiences and perspectives.

Cultural

The Witham is proud of its heritage as a cultural landmark in Barnard Castle. Our artistic and cultural programme will continue to be led by a strong ethos around working with local people and engaging with local communities. We will also work to showcase traditional and contemporary work which appeals to our existing users, as well as attracting new audiences.

Commercial

The redevelopment of The Witham will contribute to the wider regeneration in Barnard Castle. We will develop a strong commercial offer, with facilities and services which support and promote business development, tourism and the evening economy in the town. This will help sustain the operations of the charity and ensure that the building is financially and environmentally sustainable for future generations.
